Best Mates is a charity that the staff at the Glen Iris Veterinary Hospital established after deciding that they wanted to give something back to the local community.
We work with the Salvation Army Crisis Centre and Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda to provide free or low cost veterinary care to people who are otherwise unable to afford it.
We focus on preventative health care and utilising the charities resources to alleviate suffering and pain of the pets we see. Most of the people we see are able to provide excellent care for their pets (food, warmth, exercise and TLC) and absolutely love their pets, but are unable to afford the cost of veterinary care. This is where we come in.
Once a month we travel to the Salvation Army Crisis Centre for consultations with pets of all different shapes and sizes, however in between we may see animals that require more immediate help. We also provide emergency cat boarding for owners who have lost their accommodation at short notice.
At the recent Royal Commission into Domestic Violence the importance of short term emergency pet boarding facilities was made clear as many women currently do not leave violent relationships for fear of retribution on the pets left behind.
We rely on donations from the public for this charity to continue to operate and grow!
